Nambé: A Short History and Cleaning Tutorial

Nambé is the epitome of classic, mid-century food serving ware. I, personally, find the fluid form mixed with untarnished shine, combined with that heaviness-that-feels-like-quality to be unrivaled by any other medium.

{Kat’s collection of Nambé}

Founded near Nambé Pueblo in New Mexico in 1951, it is made of a top secret eight-metal alloy that is oven safe and food safe (although it can be discolored by acidic foods.) Something about their metal is amazing at retaining temperature for long periods of time, according to nambe.com. Their new pieces are still produced and for sale in Nambé stores and through big box stores like Bed Bath and Beyond. But, of course, I find the older pieces to have a certain nostalgic quality.

There are a lot of look-a-likes out there, so know that all genuine pieces will have some mark similar to these on the bottom and a definite heavy weight.

{Example of Nambé marks}

As you can see, I personally have amassed quite a collection from various thrift stores, yard sales, a pair of champagne flutes as a wedding present and of course a few older pieces from the Plaza! I think the shiny pieces go with everything, it brings in a modern shine to any space.

{Bowls, candle holders, frames, vases… they make it all}

Some of the pieces I’ve found/received are a little more loved that others. This one in particular really was  in rough shape.

If you have pieces that aren’t completely dull, the Nambé polish works fairly well.

{polishing supplies}

Along with the polish you will need some gloves –it will turn your hands black otherwise– and a shammy cloth. I just got this polish and tried it out on the large serving bowl.  It had lost it’s mirror finish after we wet-sanded it to get some gouges out.

{polishing method}

Following the directions, I put a little bit on and went in circle motions, the shammy turned black like they said and I went over the whole piece. It helped some, but I think it needs a more abrasive polish. It was necessary to wet sand that bowl to make it usable.

{Nambé after wet-sand}

It is looking a lot better, hopefully we can restore it to it’s full shine with some more sanding. As another option Nambé will refinish your pieces for 30 percent of their retail cost as a fee.

Well I hope you learned a little something about Nambé and if you see any, whether it is in our shop or out and about, I hope you’ll consider getting some of your own. Their brand has upheld for 61 years and I don’t see them going out of style any time soon!

This week, Feb. 14 to be exact, Arizona celebrated its 100th birthday! So we asked some of our dealers, employees and friends, what’s your favorite thing about Arizona?

Greg (owner and dealer #69) : “The people who live here and the people who pass through.”

Vicki (dealer ): “Mesa, because it’s been home since 1953.”

William (dealer #397): “Spending the long days playing with my daughter. Whether we’re swimming in the pool or rolling in the snow, it’s always lots of fun!”

Amorey (AP employee): “Work and ASU.”

Jill (dealer #19): “The beautiful winters, the sunshine and the honest people.”

Kat: “I love the sunsets, even after living here all my life they still take my breath away. I also love being surrounded by mountains and the fact that I can drive a few hours and be in a completely different climate (Cali, Flagstaff, Sedona.)”

Ed (dealer #22): “I don’t have to shovel snow. And you can turn the desert into anything you want it to be.”

Jeanne (dealer #811): “A safe environment to raise my family.”

Nick (former AP employee and Kat’s husband): “The roads and highways are well laid out and made with great asphalt compared to other states I’ve driven in. And the drivers aren’t too bad either.”

Beverly (dealer #431): “Traveling to work and watching the Four Peaks peek around the Superstitions. When there is snow on them it’s even more beautiful.”

Kelly (dealer #937): “The summer monsoons and sunsets!”

Michelle (dealer #117): “Hunting ghosts down backroads.”

DIY Wrapping Ideas For Your Valentine

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! Hopefully you have gotten that special someone(s) in your life something thoughtful already! One of my favorite things about giving presents (besides seeing their reaction) is wrapping the presents up all nice. And the great thing about it is, you don’t need anything fancy. I use whatever is around the house: fabric scraps, ribbon, sewing notions, anything!

First up:

{Everything good is in a tiny box}

Materials:

  • Old sewing pattern paper (booth #431, 25 cents)
  • Vintage silver zig-zag trim (had in sewing box)
  • Scrap of leather for bow (bought from Tandy’s Leather in Tempe)

For this tiny jewelry-sized box I wanted the look of brown paper but with a little visual interest so I used pattern paper to wrap it. (The arrow reminds me of cupid, so cute!-Erica) For trim, I thought the ruggedness of unfinished leather and glitter zig zag trim went perfectly together!

Next up:

{A sewn look}

Materials:

  • Brown craft paper
  • A cut strip of vintage lace (had in sewing box)
  • A cut strip of vintage floral fabric (cut with pinking shears, had in sewing box)
  • Random buttons (booth #88, a jar full for $5)
  • Scrap of cork (had in office supplies)
  • thread (had in sewing box)

For this ultra-feminine look I used plain craft paper to wrap it. I then adorned it with a variety of sewing items that gave it charm and vintage appeal. I fastened the strip of pink cloth by sewing on a button, then strung a little garland of buttons and taped the thread on the underside (if you pull it tight, the buttons will stay spaced out!)

I cut out cork in the shape of a heart and sewed the simple stitches with red thread before glueing it under the button and I simply taped on the maroon lace to the box. I love how the brown paper really makes the texture of cork, lace, and fabric pop.

Lastly:

{A masculine gift with a secret message}

Materials:

  • Craft paper
  • Houndstooth fabric (leftover from a project, bought at Joann’s)
  • Metal wire – thicker gauge (pilfered from the garage workbench)
  • hemp string (in sewing bow)
  • black zig zag ribbon (in sewing box)
  • paper straw (I bought a pack awhile ago from Amazon here)

In case the first two presents don’t seem right for the guy in your life, I crafted this wrap job with my husband in mind. Again I used craft paper to wrap it. I taped a strip of fabric going one way (no hemming needed, a little fray never hurt anyone!) and taped a black ribbon going the other way.

For the bow I had to use needle nosed pliers to cut and twist it – basically I made two loops and twisted them together to look like a bow. The grey trim is a paper straw cut up and strung on hemp string. It’s also morse code for I love you!

Well, I hope you all can implement some of these wrapping ideas. A nicely wrapped present just expresses that much more time and effort for your valentine and makes any present extra special (of course if the present inside is a gift certificate to Antique Plaza it’s a double win! ;) )

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!

Meet-A-Booth Q&A With Dealer #35

There’s no doubt that what makes Antique Plaza special is our assemblage of awesome dealers! We have more than 100 antique dealers who put their heart and soul into what they do, making their booths shine. We truly appreciate them and think you should get to know them too!

It’s time to meet another one of Antique Plaza’s special dealers! Today we’re talking to Jeri Holly who is a well-rounded antique collector and seller! She and her sister Vicki started their antique selling business, Retired Sisters, five years ago, and what a great collaboration it has been! They live in the same neighborhood and hunt for deals together on the weekends. Once a month they have dinner together while they price and catalog their items, turning a boring job into a fun bonding experience! They’re both such sweet ladies and they sell the most charming greeting cards, perfect for Valentine’s Day!

 {Jeri, a master organizer, sells cards for every occasion}

 Antique Plaza: How did you get into selling antiques and what kinds of things do you sell?

 Jeri Holly: “I was an antique collector for 25 years before I started selling at the Antique Plaza five years ago with my sister Vicki. I shopped in the Northeast and I loved to go on antique tours with my friends. I have so collected so many things, including Christmas decorations, Mccoy and Hull figures, egg cups, books and more. I sell mostly paper though; books, valentines, maps, menus, etc.”

{Left: Vintage valentines for your sweetheart. Right: A more humorous approach to Valentine’s Day?}

 AP: Your collections sound so vast. Tell us more about them.

JH: “Well, I have a globe collection, I have 63 of them in my living room. When I retired from teaching I got to keep the globes in my classroom and that’s how it started. I also collect black tea cups because they’re hard to find, so that way I don’t get too many of them. I wanted to make it a challenge. I also have a Christmas tree solely decorated with humpty dumpty ornaments. But my biggest collection is paper products. I like to collect George Washington and Abraham Lincoln postcards, Mother Goose children’s books and 1920s single-sheet Christmas cards. My collections are spilling over! That’s why I don’t collect anything that’s large.”

AP: What makes paper products so special to you?

JH: “I just love the graphics and artwork. I taught school for 34 years and I was familiar with a lot of illustrators and I just love their work. They have beautiful graphics and colors and they inspire me when I decorate my booth.”

{There’s always time for a good book}

AP: In your opinion, do you prefer messages to be written in old cards or are they a better find when the inside is blank?

JH: “Postcards, I love to have them written on because that’s part of the fascination, especially postcards. It’s part of the charm of collecting them. I prefer to see the date on them and have some message to keep.”

“I still use cards, the blank vintage ones or sometimes I will buy from the store. I don’t use email and I like to send personal cards. I have a file cabinet full of them and I can just pick out a Christmas or birthday to send.”

{Left: Jeri can often be found tucked away in her downstairs booth, working tirelessly, or catching up on some light reading! Right: Photographs, classic novels, albums, maps and children’s books.}

AP: What does your husband think of all of your collections?

JH: “My husband likes all the things I have but he’s not a collector himself. He does collect candy jars but that’s all. He’s more of an outdoors person. But all of my friends and family are so supportive. It’s especially great to have my sister with me. She likes to collect purple and green depression glass and quails. So we like to look for each other.”

{They aren’t black, so Jeri couldn’t keep them :) }

AP: What has been your best find?

 JH: “The hunt is always one of the things I enjoy. One time I bought a bronze figure at an estate sale. And once I found an 1880s scrapbook. It even had some civil war pictures in it and it was a wonderful find. It’s still on my shelf.”

 AP: What do you like to do when you’re not at the AP?

 JH: ”We’re much more active, we go kayaking and like traveling. We love to go on cruises and my favorite is a two-week cruise. Next month were cruising to Hawaii and to the South Pacific for my husband’s birthday. He loves the ocean and water activities. My favorite has been Alaska, it is the most beautiful state besides Arizona. I don’t like the cold but it has been the best cruise so far.”

{Beautiful jewelry from Jeri’s case upstairs}

AP: Any last thoughts?

JH: “I think everyone should come in here and do their gift shopping for something unusual and interesting instead of the ordinary. It’s a wonderful experience for all ages, there’s something for everyone here.”

Thanks Jeri! You were a great subject to interview :)

Until next time,

A Valentine’s Day Wreath

Hi everyone! We’re back, and just in time to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a sweet trio of mini wreaths!

For this month’s wreath we decided to use vintage jello molds, cookie cutters (heart shaped of course) and a few other kitchen items. The plaza has a ton of these molds at very reasonable prices.

First we arranged them on the table…

Then we used an embroidery hoop as a guide to make sure the wreath was circular in a way that would hang correctly.

Then we used good ol’ hot glue to fasten all the molds to each other.

We used red twine to hang them from kitchen cabinets, bringing some Valentine’s cheer to the hub of the household.

We love these mini wreaths because the difference in shapes is complemented by the unification of color and sheen. They’re vintage yet modern, with a little bit of romantic charm!

{Kat’s wreath above, Erica’s wreath below}

And this copper heart mold was just perfect by itself!

This little wreath reminds us of sugar-coated gumdrops.

This project was truly a labor of love: It didn’t take much labor, and that’s what we love! :)

What projects are you guys working on for Valentine’s Day? We’d love to see or hear about them!

12th Annual Historic Mesa Home Tour

Despite living in Mesa for almost 15 years, I hadn’t attended the Mesa home tour yet. So this year I was determined to go! It was a blast, and really inspiring to see how people incorporate new and old items in their homes. I took a bunch of pictures and I thought I’d share some of the highlights with you! How cute is the outside of this house? I love the red, grey and white.

The living room here was picturesque and traditional. It really feels so warm and inviting. I am oh-so-jealous of those high ceilings!

Tuesdays with Dorie’s back porch looked straight out of a magazine. I would love to cuddle up with a book back there. And doesn’t that light fixture look like a perfect DIY project?

The wall color in this living room goes amazingly with the brick fireplace and wood floors, and those silhouettes of the family are amazing!

This large framed photograph in one of the homes was stunning, look at all of those fashionable ladies!

This detail was also in Dorie’s home. How cute is that, framing flashcards. Not many dogs eat in such style!

This fireplace look familiar? Gotta love these retro fireplaces, in and out of the house.

This traditional dining room really puts their blue and white china on perfect display and I am really loving that collection of trays on the wall.

This old coffee grinder looked like it had been built with the house. I don’t know how well it works but it just looked perfect in their kitchen.

And lastly, I got a lesson in vignettes at Dories’s house. I never would have thought to arrange books that way, with an old frame for a tray too, genius!

It was really a fun tour and I would encourage you to go next year if you can. I like to think some of their items came from our shop, but who knows! All of these homes incorporated new and old objects so wonderfully. It was really inspiring and gave me some DIY ideas for this coming year, so stay tuned!

I Had A Blue, Blue Blue Blue Christmas

Good afternoon everyone! I hope you all had a memorable Christmas yesterday. I spent the morning with a smile on my face shopping for wrapping paper at some after-Christmas sales and tidying up from the festivities at my house yesterday.

This year, I challenged myself to create an out-of-the-box Christmas theme. I decided to collect 20 pairs of unwanted denim and see what I could come up with. I tried to use as much of the jeans as possible to make all of the decor in my house, and let me tell you almost nothing went to waste! I am so pleased with the end result, and I hope you like it too! :)
{Peace on earth}

Here’s my table setting. I got a new Christmas dish set from my mom this year, and it is so gorgeous! To flank the blue poinsettia, I found two lanterns at a yard sale and sprayed them blue, then lit pillar candles inside. I also found a long piece of denim at Goodwill that I used as a table runner.
The denim napkins placed under the dinner plates are from a yard sale, and I used extra scraps of denim I had leftover to finish off the table. I made mini trees out of scraps and topped them with stars to use as place cards. Then, to hold the silverware I cut out the most interesting pockets.

By the way, who knew that they make blue pointsettias? I didn’t! I picked this lovely plant up at Frys, and re-planted it. (It needed a little TLC…) I love that it’s a classic staple of Christmas but it also fits my theme perfectly. At the last minute I found out I was having 8 guests instead of 6, but we made it work and everyone enjoyed a beautiful Christmas dinner.
Blue Dove chocolates, blue striped candy canes and pretzels covered in white chocolate dropped into glass jars made for a cute mini candy buffet.
Tossing ornaments in a bowl is always a go-to decorating idea in my house. I thought these blue snowman ornaments were too cute to pass up at a yard sale!
The best picture I could get of my all-blue tree, but really it doesn’t do it justice. I used blue ornaments as the base, then added gorgeous crystal drop ornaments to give it sparkle. Then, I changed out a vintage strand of big multi-colored bulbs (which ended up being a little dangerous, I wouldn’t recommend messing around with those!) so that they were all the beautiful blue/teal colored bulbs. The bulbs somehow gave my tree an industrial feel, which I didn’t intend on, but I really loved it! It looked like it could fit right in as decor in the Gap, or in a hop loft apartment in NYC. (At least it did to me, but I like to flatter myself haha!)

The garland near the ceiling was also difficult to capture in a picture. It was the biggest statement of all in the room, covering 30 feet of wall space! It was really easy too. All I did was cut up A LOT of denim strips from jeans with all different washes, then I tied them to a string of lights until it was full and bushy.

I rolled up the remnants of the jeans I had left, and used them as extra-large ornaments.

And we even used the last pieces to wrap a present! All in all, the decor cost less than $20, and it set the stage for a very special day with friends and family. But alas, now we’re on to a new year, filled with lots of exciting plans for the Antique Plaza and the blog. We’ll see you all in 2012!
